Nelda Sue Bradberry Duke of Winder, GA passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at the age of eighty-four.
Nelda was born in Winder, GA on April 29, 1937. As a young child she moved to Pensacola, FL where her father was contracted as a carpenter to work at Naval Air Station Pensacola. She always remembered the time she spent growing up in Pensacola fondly and with a smile. When Nelda was a young teenager, the Bradberry family moved back to Winder. At this time, Nelda began to attend Winder High School, where she met her future husband, Donald Eugene Duke. Nelda and Donald were happily married from 1954 until his death in 1999. Nelda loved Donald more than anything else (aside from her children and grandchildren) and she was happy to recount stories of their many, wonderful years together.
Nelda was full of love, laughter, and strength. Strong-willed and comically opinionated, she was a woman ahead of her time in many ways. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother who guided her family with grace when times were tough and rejoiced with a boisterous laugh when times were great – which, she was quick to tell you, was almost all the time.
She is survived by her son, Steve E. Duke; her daughter and son-in-law, Donna Sue Duke Gallups and Hank Gallups; her grandchildren, Henry Gallups, Page Duke Ratliff, husband David, Josh Duke, wife Ashley, and Dixie Gallups Hamilton, husband Zachary; great-grandchildren Lindsey Bradley, Logan Bradley, and Arthur Hamilton; her sister, Dorothy Bradberry Ellis; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Nelda is preceded in death by her husband of forty-eight years, Donald E. Duke; her parents, James. O. Bradberry and Bertha Leorah Pool Bradberry; and her sisters Julia Bradberry Phillips and Jimmy Ruth Bradberry Beaver.
The family will hold a visitation at Carter Funeral Home in Winder, GA on Thursday, September 23, 2021, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
