Ms. Rachel Thompson

Ms. Rachel Thompson, a dedicated educator and beloved member of her community, passed away on February 23, 2025, at the age of 99.

Born in Bethlehem on May 20, 1925, Rachel devoted her life to teaching and leaving a lasting impact on countless young minds throughout her forty-year career in education.

Rachel began her educational journey at the age of four when she embraced the value of learning throughout her life. She graduated from the University of Georgia and started her teaching career at the age of eighteen. Ms. Thompson served at Bethlehem Elementary School as an educator and retired as a reading specialist from the Barrow County School System, where her commitment educating students was met with profound appreciation by students, parents, and colleagues alike.

Her caring nature extended beyond the classroom; as a lifelong member of Bethlehem First United Methodist Church, she was actively involved in the choir and dedicated many years to teaching Sunday School. Her contributions to both her church and community epitomized her belief in the importance of education and service.

Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her father, Henry Thompson; mother, Alma Jo Thompson; sister, Frances Thompson Hagood; and nephew, George Hagood.

Ms. Thompson is survived by her nieces, Sarah Hagood and Rebecca Henson. 

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Bethlehem First United Methodist Church with Rev. Frank Bernat officiating. Burial will follow the service at Bethlehem First United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will be receiving friends on Friday, March 7, 2025 from 1:00 PM until the service hour at Bethlehem First United Methodist Church.
